Road Kill on a Snowy Day

Many years ago during my old career I was working on patrol for the Sheriff’s office. This would have been around 1977. We had a snow storm (enough to close everything down) come through and of course we had to go out in the stuff. Nobody else would be other than emergency folks and fools who had to show their families they could drive in the snow.

I enjoyed fools.  We would happen up on them a ditch upright with little damage or, upside down with injuries I don’t recall a fool related death on the roadway.  These folks were hilarious telling us their stories about what happened “I hit the brakes and kept sliding” – fool brakes will not stop on ice. “I turned the wheels and I kept going straight into ditch” – fool where you expected to end up on ice.

Kids on sleds were great. Back then we really didn’t have that many fools so kids would find a hill on a roadway – Chapel Hill road was good they had a great time. I don’t know how the emergency room made out on those but, kids would be kids.

Today’s mess reminded me of one particular snow. The statute of limitations is up. The game for the day was to find a rabbit or two killed by a car not broken up enough to eat.  Yes, folks road kill for dinner. We set out on our hunt to round as many up as we could. The road kill had to be legal. In other words we could not aim for the desired food that was not sporting or fair to the rabbit and its family.  Also, we would end up in a ditch with our hood sight only on the rabbit.

We bundled up the kill of the day and took them to the old jail. There the inmates cleaned them and prepared them for the end of watch dinner. It was a great time. Those were good times. I know a lot of PETA folks will be after my head but, that was many years ago and no animal was killed in the making of this war story.
To you fools out there stay at home. Don't endanger my friends lives.
To the emergency folks and others out there today God bless you. You take care of yourselves, and if you can get by with a road kill meal it will make one of your best memories of your life.

Death sentence for parents of Emani

Emani Moss never made it to adulthood much less her 11th birthday. in early November her father and step-mother starved her to death and tried to burn her body in a trash container. When the burning failed  to cover up their crime Eman called the Gwinnett county police and led them to her body.

the department of Family and Children Services received six complaints of abuse or, neglect from the time she was born until the day she died. as late as 2010 she was removed from her step mother for beating her. later on she was returned to the family. two months before her death complaint came into DFCS that there were suspicions that Emani was being neglected. the child was very thin and something is wrong. the reported was anonymous and the case screened out.

in my career I worked with youth for many years. I was in charge of the Child abuse, and death review boards in the late 1990's. I worked with the department of youth services on juvenile crimes for many years and with many of the DFCS investigators.

where does blame lie? every governor has promised more workers and higher salaries. in the 37 years I worked in law enforcement those promises were made every election. money was thrown out, workers hired, and the director changed. that was it.

what I saw in the field was no movement to clean house where it needed to be done. the only governor that tried was Zell Miller and he a was shut down when he began firing political appointees. He did what he could.

time is way over due to clean all management out. every time I walked into a DFCS office they never changed programs to the degree needed. there were no new ideas. the directors heads were cut before they could get settled in and a kid was killed. middle management was free to go about their jobs with out punitive action.

Governor it is time to cut the head off of the snake and bring replace every policy maker there. send em packing.

District Attorney Porter do your normal great deed. Sent those two to their maker. I am sure his fire will burn them and the will feel it forever.

Ruffleling the feathers

I am tired. I am tired of Douglas county politics. Those that know may ask why well you are fixin to get a political history lesson. My dad Bill Rider was the original true stalwart republican. there were four things you had to be to live under his roof and/or, be married to his children. You must believe in God, be a Presbyterian, believe in the second amendment, and vote straight line republican. There were other requirements but, these were the main ones.

As far back as I can remember other than when Jack Kennedy was killed my dad supported the republican. I believe he voted for Nixon over Kennedy but, he firmly stood behind Kennedy and his principals and never wavered in honor of a man who died for his country by a low down commie thug.

When the floundering republican party of Douglas County came into being in the early 60's Barry Goldwater was the first presidential candidate for us to have a sign in our yard. Someone in the party decided to have a parade through the county for the honorable Goldwater.  Dad had a 1960 Dodge pickup that we covered with red, white, and blue streamers. We had faux straw hats on and were giving out a drink "Goldwater" a novelty. We came into McWhorther you new folks call South Douglas when an old yellow dog democrat ran out of his house with a double barrel shotgun pointed in the air. I must say that Dodge truck got us out town.\

We ruffled some feathers. That is where I learned my first of many lessons of feather ruffling. One of the best was Sheriff Lee. The man was a natural he told me if you stirred enough it would all come out and he has always been right.

Where I am headed with this is we don't have the two party system as it was then but, it is coming back and I like it. It is apparent that we republicans can not get along with each other on common ground.

Give some folks options. Folks ask some questions don't set on your rear at home and let it go by. Go to every official meeting you can. The money be spent is ours not theirs (we will go there one day). We have the right to know.

What is the disagreement about a combined Development Authority? Why have two leaders throwing punches over an issue that can and has brought money into both the city and county?  We need tax income to continue to keep both entities up and business is the ticket. So, what who is in charge? It is a common goal to bring tax money in. Jeff Noles and Chris Pumphrey are more capable of bringing business into our county. This is duplication that we to do away with so, stop doing a tap dance and get on the card..

The tax increase was so un-popular and I agree. I am disabled on a fixed income as many other folks are and need the break. How many of you have looked at our infrastructure? We have roads falling a part. Pot holes are everywhere. West Stewart Mill road is a windshield and an injured kid waiting thappen. A study completed in 2008 we had about 15 bridges over or approaching 50 years old.  Six of those were taken out in the flood of 2009.

Where will the money come from? The state is broke and the Feds are busy bailing out every big city and country it can with China's money. China will call the debt one day.

Wake up folks this aint going away.
